“A COMMANDING PRESENCE AS BOTH SINGER AND CHARACTER”

TheaterScene November 2014

Recent critical appraisal of baritone Justin Ryan’s “intimidating, cavernous voice, dramatic tone,” (Opera News) “commanding presence,” (TheaterScene) and singing of “tremendous charisma and sympathy” (New York Classical Review) augur “unusually forceful” (Opera News) future performances. After delivering a “deft, strong portrayal” (New York Times) of the painter Edward Hopper with New York City Opera in 2016, Ryan debuts this season with Chicago Opera Theater and Long Beach Opera, assuming the role of Walt Disney in the American premier of Philip Glass’ semi-biographical fantasia, The Perfect American.
